Application for a Driving Test

1. CATEGORIES OF MECHANICALLY PROPELLED VEHICLES

CATEGORY	VEHICLES IN CATEGORY
AI	Motorcycles with an engine size of 51 - 125 cc and/or a speed capability over 45 km/h and with a power rating not exceeding 11 kW., with or without a sidecar.
A	Motorcycles with or without a sidecar.
B	(Cars and Light Vans) Vehicles with passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons and having a design G.V.W. not over 3,500 kg.
C1	(Large Vans and Light Trucks) Vehicles with passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons and having a design G.V.W. over 3,500 kg but not over 7,500 kg.
C	(Trucks) Vehicles with passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons and having a design G.V.W.over 3,500 kg.
D1	(Minibuses) Vehicles in Category D with passenger accommodation for more than 8 persons but not more than 16 persons.
D	(Buses) Vehicles with passenger accommodation for more than 8 persons.
^*EB	Vehicles in Category B with trailer attached.
^*EC	Articulated Trucks and Trucks in Category C with a trailer attached.
^*EC1	Vehicles in Category C 1 with trailer attached - the combination must not exceed 12,000 kg.
^*ED	Vehicles in Category D with trailer attached.
^*ED1	Vehicles in Category D 1 with trailer attached - the combination must not exceed 12,000 kg.
M	Two - wheeled vehicles with an engine size not exceeding 50 cc and/or a speed capability not more than 45 km/h.
W	Work vehicles and land tractors with or without a trailer attached.

^*To be eligible for a provisional licence/test in these categories, you must be the holder of a full licence for the drawing vehicle. “Passenger accommodation” means seating accommodation for passengers in addition to the driver.

In the case of motorcycles a sidecar is not permitted for test purposes (except in the case of a disabled person).

2. PROVISIONAL LICENCE REQUIREMENTS

To undergo a Driving Test, you must hold a Provisional Licence covering the category in which you wish to be tested. In certain circumstances, eligibility for a Provisional Licence is conditional on the Applicant already holding a full Driving Licence for a smaller/lighter vehicle. Consequently, before you apply for the test, you should ensure that you hold the correct Provisional Licence. Eligibility for a third or subsequent Provisional Licence for any category of vehicle is dependent on you having undergone a driving test within the previous two years or providing evidence of a forthcoming driving test appointment in respect of the vehicle category in question. In the case of the latter, when applying for a driving test, applicants should submit a written request from their local Motor Taxation Office indicating the need for an early driving test appointment. If you have any doubt about your eligibility for a Provisional Licence you should enquire immediately with your local Motor Taxation Office. 3. FEE

Please note that your application must be accompanied by the fee appropriate to each category of test. These are set out hereunder AND ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE. Payment should be made by postal order, money order or cheque. These should be crossed and made payable to the Minister for Transport. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH. Applications accompanied by an incorrect fee will be returned.

4. CANCELLING YOUR DRIVING TEST

10 days notice of cancellation must be given, otherwise the fee is forfeit. A limit of two cancellations applies to appointments issued. Any further cancellations will result in forfeiture of the fee.
